Rules

The following rules and regulations are for the benefit of all Participants of

3on3 Stoney Creek Hockey

 
Section One: Governing Play
 
  • A majority of OMHA rules are in effect. However due to the nature of 3on3 play, some rules may be modified to better suit the quality of play.
  • With repect to expulsions, suspensions and game misconducts, referees will consult with the convenor and together a decision will be made. 
  • All incident reports of a serious nature will be reviewed. Additional disciplinary action may follow.
Section Two: Teams
  • Each player will receive a 3on3 jersey which must be worn on the ice.
  • Only registered players on team rosters may play.
  • A team shall be composed of 9-11 players and 1 goalie.
  • Each team will play with 4 players on the ice, 1 goalie and 3 players.

Section 3: Rules of Play
 
  • All games are non- contact and will be officiated by a certified referee. If a penalty is called, a penalty shot will be awarded to the other team.
  • All games will consist of 2 periods and a 3 min warm-up prior to the start of the game. Each period will include 22 minutes of continuous play. In the event of injury, the clock may be stopped by the referee. The clock may also need to be adjusted for the remainder of the game.
  • Tyke divisions will play on full ice with a 2 min buzzer indicating a shift change. When the buzzer sounds, all players must leave the ice so a new group of players can commence playing.
  • The buzzer system will continue for Novice and Atom Divisions only.
  • Pee Wee and above Divisions will implement a change on the fly system where the coaches will indicate to players when to come off the ice and make a change.
  • At the start of the game and at the start of Period 2 the puck will be dropped at centre ice.
  • Icings will not be called however off-sides will. If a team is called off- side they must relinquish the puck and clear the offensive zone.
  • Goalies are allowed to freeze the puck. When a goalie freezes the puck, the opposing team must retreat to the blue line. When the puck reaches the hash marks, opposing players can reenter the zone.
  • During the course of play, the referee’s decision is final. A zero tolerance rule will be in place for any player, coach or parent who abuses an official.
  • If warranted, a referee’s incident report could result in further disciplinary action.
 
 Section 4: Scoring (For Novice Divisions and above) 
 
  • When a team scores they must clear the offensive zone to allow play to continue. No passes can be intercepted until the puck crosses the blue line.
  • No individual player can score more than 5 goals per period. If a 6th goal is scored by the same player, in the same period, the goal will not count. The total number of goals any one player can achieve is 10 goals per game.
  • Exception
  • : the above rule will be waived under the following conditions:
  1. If a game is tied or the team is losing then the goal will count
  2. If the goal is scored as a result of a penalty shot.
Scoring cont.
  • If a team is leading by 5 or more goals the opposing team will be allowed to play with an extra player.
  • Once the differential is down to 2 goals, the extra player allowance must be removed.

Section 5: Minor Penalties
 
  • If the referee calls a penalty the other team will be awarded a penalty shot.
  • If the player is unable to take the shot (due to injury) another player on the ice may take his/her place.
  • No time will be served in the penalty box. However if a player is assessed a total of 3 minor penalties in the same game, he/she will be ejected from the game.
  • An ejection of a player/coach with less than 2 minutes left to play shall lead to a further game misconduct.
  • Coincidental penalties will off-set each other and result in a face-off at centre ice.

Section 6:  Major Penalties
If a major penalty is called the following will occur:

1) A penalty shot will be awarded.
2) The penalized player will sit in the penalty box for 4 mins and the opposing team will be
allowed to play with an extra player for the duration of the penalty.
3) Since it is a major penalty the penalized player will remain in the box.
4) If the penalized team falls behind by a differential of 5 goals or more they cannot add an
extra player until the major penalty has been served.
5) Once the major penalty has expired regular 3on3 play will resume.
6) If a second major penalty is called the same rules will apply and the opposing team will
have a 5 on 3 advantage until the first major penalty expires.
7) If 2 major penalties are called (one per team) both players will sit in the penalty box and regular 3on3 play
will continue.

Fighting
1st offence-   game misconduct and a 1 game suspension.
2nd offence - game misconduct and a 2 game suspension.
3rd offense-   game misconduct and permanent league expulsion.

A player suspended or expelled will not be entitled to any refund or credit.
 
Section 7: Penalty Shots

The procedure for a penalty shot will be as follows:
 
  • The clock will not stop unless there is an injury following the penalty call.
  • All players will skate to centre ice and will wait for the referee to blow his whistle.
  • At the first whistle only the player taking the shot can proceed. Once the player reaches the blue line, the referee will blow his whistle again allowing players to resume the game.
  • If a goal is scored, the scoring team must clear the blue zone and play will continue.
  • If a goal is not scored, play resumes immediately.

Section 8: Empty Net

When a team is behind they may pull the goalie and add an extra player.

Section 9: Ice Time
 
  • Coaches will make every effort to ensure equal ice time for all players.
  • There is to be no shortening of the benches.
  • Disregard for this rule could result in a forfeiture of the game.

 

Section 10- Injury
  • If a player is injured the referee will stop play immediately and the clock will be stopped. Play/clock will resume once the player has safely made to his/her bench.
  • Every effort will be made to safely remove the player from the ice. If a serious injury is suspected a 911 call will be made and the game will be terminated.
  • If necessary time will be reduced on the clock to avoid games falling behind schedule.




Section 11- Other

Stoney Creek 3on3 Hockey appreciates your co-operation in ensuring that this League is a FUN and Safe endeavour for everyone involved. We are committed to promoting the game of hockey that fosters an environment where everyone is respected and demonstrates good sportsmanship on and off the ice. Comments or behaviour deemed to be disrespectful, offensive, abusive, racist or sexist will not be tolerated. This applies to players, parents, coaches and referees. Lastly, the use of cell phones, cameras or video recorders in dressing rooms is strictly prohibited.
